In some ways. Psychological Dramas have to, well, sort of not make sense. Its origins come from surrealism, challenging the barriers of realism. In its definition surreal is all about being enigmatic. So, in a way psychological dramas, or thrillers, or even horror films, in a way, tend to lead to inconclusive answers to the questions that themes bring up. The trick of course, is if some questions that are brought from the themes of the story are inconclusive, then stray away from being incoherent. Or if you desire your story to be incoherent, then there must be conclusive answers to bind it. Some Other Woman is a perfect example of that error. A psychological suspenseful drama made in 2023 film that is at times, lost in its own created labyrinth. Made in 2023 it is now available in the U.S in January of 2025. The film is Directed by Joel David Moore, and stars Amanda Crew, Ashley Greene and Tom Felton.
Technically, this film hit all the checks, the sound is great, the film editing is superb, the cinematography and lighting is gorgeous, costume and make-up fantastic. Production design and set design are all terrific. That is why it is perplexing how polished and clean the film is made. It is that they used a script that seems so…unpolished and rough. Three people are credited with the writing of the script. I suspect some are for the rewrites and not all three collaborated. I do enjoy the themes it presents. The duality of a person, losing your identity being a servant to another person’s ideals and goals. The metaphor of the ocean as a divider of worlds, and of course mental illness not being addressed. There is a great concept of a story here. The loss of identity through tragedy, and servitude has to be flushed out more. The use of water as some sort of portal to another realm for me is the most intriguing and I wish it wasn’t treated so casually. Some Other Woman had the potential to be a great film if it choosed to go diving deep into those psychological trope themes, instead it rather tread the water in the shallow end.
