Director Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise have been quite the team up, with collaborations with Jack Reacher films, and Top Gun Maverick, and McQuarrie being a screenwriter for a couple of Tom Cruise’s films “Valkyrie” and “Edge of Tomorrow”. Clearly there is something in McQuarrie’s writing that Cruise likes and enjoys working with. FInal Reckoning takes place only a few months after Dead Reckoning part one. It also begins with a compilation of scenes and snippets of all the previous ones. FInal Reckoning wants to be the culmination of all the missions and it is, it’s just clearly not the last one (Franchises tend to do that.)
FInal Reckoning is never slow and keeps the drama and intensity. Having included NIck Offerman and Mark Gratiss in it is a nice peppering. SInce the Oscars are now nominating stunts, obviously this film will be nominated. With great stunts, there are other notable tropes in it. The rich people gala, the car chase, the plan exposition narration. The one trope I will never be tired of though is the dutch angles for the talking heads shots- it always brings a smile to my face. Being a sequel to a franchise might hurt its luster since you need to see Dead Reckoning beforehand, or hell, all of them to enjoy the viewing experience. With seven of these made and another in pre-production, fatigue might be settling in and hurt the enticement of seeing it in imax which I strongly recommend. Overall, a great tie-in to the franchise and wild thrill ride, that does teeter in being prediable in some aspects, but entertaining, absolutely entertaining. 8/10
